From HD TV to Do-It-Yourself Projects: Three Updates You Should Make to Your Home This Year

Considering the current economic climate, most of us feel less than inclined to make updates or changes around the house.  Even the littlest things can add up and prove costly over time.  And with the approach of the always expensive holiday season, we may be nervous about spending beyond our means.  So we let leaky roofs stay leaky for a while longer before calling in a professional.  We put a piece of furniture over that carpet stain instead of paying to have it cleaned.  We stick to last season's wardrobe and hold out for better days.

Nevertheless, there are a few updates that all should consider making around the house.  Some are more costly than others, but you may be surprised to find out that they are worth it.  Here are three things you should at least think about doing this year in your household:

1.    Start Up a Do-It-Yourself Project

You may not be the craftiest person in the world, but that doesn't mean that DIY isn't right for you.  A great way to find a new hobby and relieve stress, starting up a do-it-yourself project in your home isn't as hard as you may think.  Spending some time watching the various home-related channels on television can give you lots of great ideas, as can talking to friends and family about projects they've taken on in the past.  Don't take on too much ' deciding to build a deck when you've never held a hammer will be more harmful than it will helpful.  Pick out a simple project you think you might enjoy, such as recovering a chair, building a shelf or painting a room, to get started.  If you do, in fact, like completing the first project, you will be sure to move on to bigger and better things in the future.

2.    Update Your Home Entertainment System

While this can be pricey, it is also worthwhile.  With technologies such as high definition and satellite TV, television is bigger and better than ever.  Hundreds of channels are now available with both entertaining and educational content fit for the entire family.  Sports fans will love something like the NFL Sunday Ticket, while music lovers will enjoy the availability of various music channels.  As the television has becoming an increasing point of gathering, it is important to make the time spent in front of it is worthwhile.

3.    Make Your Space a Gathering Place

If you're concerned about being able to afford that new television system, consider this option as a way to cut costs.  Instead of meeting friends for a night out for dinner to at the movie theater, host a gathering in your home.  Talk to friends about setting up a system of rotation, or ask everyone to chip in, and spend some nights in eating, watching movies and playing games.  Making a few changes around your house is all you need to do to set up ' moving around furniture, putting out a few extra chairs, maybe investing in a few extra glasses or a couple of new board games.  Not only is this a cost-effective way to socialize, but it is also more intimate.

The economic crisis doesn't mean that all home updates have to come to a halt.  While high definition television may be a bit costly, saving in other areas such as do-it-yourself fixes and nights in can make it all possible.  You'll be surprised at what making just a few changes can do.
